He spent his boyhood in Jackson, Michigan and went on to attend Racine College. In 1882, at the age of 27, Hamilton went into the furnishing business in Grand Rapids, Michigan under the firm name of Wellington and Carhartt. In 1884, Hamilton moved to Detroit and established a wholesale furnishing business under the firm name Hamilton Carhartt & Co. Just five years later, Hamilton converted the business into an enterprise devoted exclusively to manufacturing apparel for working men. He began with only four sewing machines and about five employees. The first products turned out were overalls in denim fabrics for men working on and building for the railroads. Carhartt, Inc. is committed to serving our customers through quality manufacturing. We have served those who work and play in the outdoors for four generations and we’re committed to serving them for generations to come.
