Reviewed By: on 12/21/2008 Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month Pros: Works absolutely great! in eSATA and USB mode. The leather case looks way better than I thought. I thought it was going to be all cheap syn leather, its actually a nice thick natural material! I get burst reads and write speeds of 90MB/sec from my Hitachi 250GB. No AC adaptor required, the Y-USB cable works real good providing power in USB or eSATA mode. The slip case that this comes with is awesome. It has an elastic side pocket to keep your included USB Y-Cable and eSATA cable with you while providing excellent cushion protection for your enclosure. Cons: My HP DV5-1000 Doesnt like my HD the the eSATA mode because I replaced the OEM drive with a seagate and the big factory vendors like HP, Acer, Toshiba do something to the OEM Hard disk that prevents it from operating in external enclosures in eSATA mode. But USB mode works like a charm. On my Big desktop, eSATA mode works flawlessly. I guess the mobo on my laptop just hates the idea of its original drive outside of the laptop. Other Thoughts: This enclosure is so much nicer and the pics do not do ths enclsure justice. Its aluminum and make really well. The Green LED activity light isnt distracting at all not to mention the craftmanship is alot better than some vantec and Azio 2.5 enclosures that cost more then this not to mention the case is made alot better than the cheap nylon netting cases that come with other brands. FYI the eSATA cable that comes with the drive is about 18in. IT works for great cause its a good travel cable. NEed something longer, spend a few more bucks and get a longer one. LAstly, do not plug any usb enclosure into a USB hub, the hub masks the initization signal or something so your drive will not appear on your PC/Mac. Its a 50/50 shot it will work. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. Did you? Reviewed By: gigablip on 12/17/2008 Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: less than 1 day Pros: Small, good looking, leather case Cons: eSATA does not work Other Thoughts: I know how the USB "Y" cable works. The drive works fine via USB only. When I plug in the USB power cable, and then the eSATA cable as instructed on coolmaxusa.com, the system freezes. When I unplug the eSATA cable, the system unfreezes after about one minute. I have an AC-powered 3.5" external drive with eSATA interface and it works fine. This thing, I can't figure out. Via USB it's quiet and convenient, but slow. Did you find this review helpful? Reviewed By: on 12/10/2008 Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day This user purchased this item from Newegg Pros: Small, eSATA is fast, nice look, USB 2.0 makes it flexable to use on systems without eSATA available. Cons: Came with no documentation, but then how much can one need or this except the explanation of the two USB connectors. Other Thoughts: I noticed alot of users saying eSATA doesn't work. one said unplugging the eSATA makes it show up as USB so that confirms users are using the wrong USB plug. One has only two connections (and one wire) and is for power when eSATA is being used. The other has 4 connections (the one with two wires) and is for use as a USB drive and MUST be left unplugged when using eSATA. If using USB and you need more power than one port will supply, you might also need to plug in both for more juice. If you try using a different smaller cable with all four connections then you will also have eSATA trouble as USB and eSATA can't exist at the same time. 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.
