Manufacturer: Cutipol Designer: Jose Joaquim Ribeiro Design Year: Contemporary Location: Portugal Size: Approximately 8.75"l Color: Brushed steel and black Material: Hand polished stainless steel blade and black resin handle Includes dinner fork, dinner knife, dessert fork, table spoon and dessert spoon. About the Product Settled by Portuguese traders in the 1500s, the small state of Goa in India was a colony of Portugals for over 450 years, and the bond between these two disparate countries serves as inspiration for this collection. While the tapered ends of the black resin handles are evocative of the black cardamom pods commonly used in Indian cooking, its hand-polished stainless steel was forged in a region of Portugal that has been the center of cutlery production for over 50 years . Form and material perfectly marry to create a set that defies tradition. About the Designer Family owned and operated since 1952, Portugal's Cutipol foundry continues a tradition of cutlery production that has earned the region the nickname "capital das cutelarias", or "capital of cutlery". Head designer, production manager, and third generation craftsman Jose Joaquim Ribeiro, Jr. has been designing for his father's company for over 30 years. With a degree in architecture from the University of Portugal, he brings a stripped-down, minimalist aesthetic to a traditional craft. Although most of the foundry's production is now mechanized, Ribeiro makes sure that each Cutipol piece is ergonomically designed and hand-polished, preserving a human connection in the design and production process. As a designer and a manager, Ribeiro is involved in every aspect of the company's dealings from the foundry to the boardroom, and his hard work has paid off, with award-winning flatware collections and an international reputation for quality.
