This Dead Pawn silver & turquoise concho belt was recently obtained from a great little pawn shop in Gallup, New Mexico. All the jewelry from this pawn shop was pawned by Native Americans living in the local area. Gallup is the "pawn capital" of the Southwest, close to the Navajo and Zuni reservations. This concho belt has 23 hand made, stamped and repoussed conchos & butterflies, made from sterling silver and set with genuine turquoise stones. The conchos measure about 2" by 1-5/8", made from sterling silver, are affixed to the leather belt with copper slides and can be adjusted as needed. Plus there is a large 2-1/2" by 1-3/4" buckle. The 1" wide black leather belt total length is 46" end-to-end. There are holes punched at the 38" & 36" position, that I can see. I can punch additional holes for you as needed. This is a used item, the exact age of which is unknown. Beautiful used condition. The buckle is hallmarked J. Blackgoat and Sterling. I'm fairly certain this is the hallmark for Jennie Blackgoat, who has been been creating extraordinarily beautiful jewelry for years (since 1975 at least) with the intricately detailed hand stamping and repousse work that the entire Blackgoat family is known for. DEAD PAWN JEWELRY. For the Southwestern Native Americans, pawn refers to the practice of converting jewelry into cash by using it as collateral for loans from authorized pawn shops. In times of need, jewelry and other items of value can be easily used as security with an authorized trader (pawned) for cash to meet the current crisis. Pawn is also used by some Native Americans in the same way that a safety deposit box would be used. The jewelry is "pawned" for safe keeping in between religious ceremonies or other special occasions. However, if the loan or pawn fees are not paid up by the agreed date, the pawn shop or trader is then authorized to sell the jewelry. When jewelry is not redeemed by its owner by the expiration date, it is referred to as Dead Pawn. My pawn shop dealers have said that for the past few years, the percentage of pawn that goes unredeemed is quite small, making items of dead pawn among the most highly valued and sought after Native American artifacts to be found on the market today.
