The rules used for playing a game of Blokus are very simple but produce interesting results. A game of Blokus makes players use their spatial thinking. Blokus has been awarded a MENSA award for being a game that promotes healthy brain activity. Children find it easy to understand these rules and adults find the game of Blokus very engrossing too. There are eighty four pieces in four colors for players to exercise their brains with. The basic game play is that players need to fit their pieces on to the board as per a few prescribed rules. The race is on to get all pieces on to the board. The player who does that first is the winner. Of course while putting his pieces on the board he should ensure that he blocks a few possible moves of his opponent(s). This is where the game gets its name Blokus from. There are 400 squares on the game board and a game of Blokus becomes very interesting if there are four players. However even two can play this game and when three players play the fourth color is generally played in turn by each of the three players to maintain the balance in moves. A game of Blokus means about half an hour of fun and creative thinking. Sometimes a game of Blokus may come to an end because there are no more possible moves. Players may be left holding pieces that they cannot use. In such a scenario the player with the least number of pieces in hand becomes the winner. At the start of the game a player should fit a piece in a corner and at every next turn his pieces should be placed in such a way that they cover as much space as possible. Any new piece should touch a piece of the same color on the board. But, wait there’s a catch; it should touch only at a corner. Pieces of other colors are allowed contact with the sides. Less than four players make a game of Blokus that much less interesting. To counter this problem several Blokus rules have sprung up. One such variant is Draft Blokus that allows one player to use more that one color. Then there is one version called Reverse Blokus that reverses the entire game- the person who places the least number of blocks on the game board becomes the winner. Half a board and one color per player is another way to make a two player game interesting. Obstacle Blokus is one variant where specified colors become obstacles for a player. Then there is Blokus Trignon in which triangular pieces on a hexagon shaped board make the game a bit different from the traditional Blokus game. Review of Blokus Board Game Blokus starts off in a tame manner with the first few moves being deceptively easy. However, don’t think that Blokus is a simple game.
