The senior executive level in the Dutch business world has traditionally been dominated by men. No surprise there, but simply a reflection of the way things were in society. Society is changing, however. We now have a more unbiased view of the traits that mark us as male or female. More and more value is being placed on characteristics traditionally considered “female” – intuition, social skills, creativity, empathy and nurturing instincts. The advantages of gender diversity are becoming clear, and the consequences for trade and industry cannot be ignored. Society is changing, and so are markets. Men and women increasingly share the same preferences. At the same time, women are becoming more and more influential when it comes to deciding what to buy; indeed, in most cases they make the final purchase decision.
