Fifteen years ago the Gracie family surprised the world of Martial Arts with the effectiveness of their Groundfighting in the early Cage-Fighting Championships. Rickson Gracie gathered an astounding record of more than 400 wins mainly using Groundfighting skills and he was never defeated. Nowadays fighters from all styles embed Groundfighting in their combat game. Unfortunately however in a lot of countries it can still be very hard to find skilled teachers. PHILOSOPHY OF INSTINCTIVE GROUNDFIGHTING In Instinctive Groundfighting the first thing we get rid of is the idea that there exists something like a fixed set of techniques with something like a fixed form of execution. If you think like that, you are predictive and limited in your development. Instead the training method of Instinctive Groundfighting aims to create useful instinctive reactions to unexpected fighting situations. "Instinctive" means "without thinking" so the reactions should be in your body and not in your mind. We realise this by the use of what we call "Limited sparring". LIMITED SPARRING "Limited sparring" means sparring under specific restrictive rules (for instance only fighting in a specific situation or only allowing the use of attack for one fighter and defence for the other). These rules can be changed depending on the process of learning. Restrictive rules should reduce the complexity of the fight, but they should never interfere with the realism of a real fight. Reason for this is that reduced complexity is needed to allow experimenting with new movements and at the same time a realistic fighting situation is needed to absorb effective instinctive responses in your body. WHAT ABOUT TECHNIQUES? When the body absorbs new movements they gradually become instinctive reactions. Restrictive rules are then gradually loosened to make the fight more complex again so the instincts will be sharpened and embedded in the complete game. When instinctive reactions are fully integrated in the body, they will interconnect into fluent movement and techniques will come out like they were invented on the spot. This is a spontaneous process so the timing and form will always be exactly adapted to the fighting situation as long as you keep your mind empty. CONCLUDING Instinctive Groundfighting is an explorative kind of experience-learning. Because anything you learn by experience, you don't have to remember so you don't have to think. This intense method gives depth to your development as a fighter and makes your training even more fun. You will definately be surprised by the clarity of explanation and the practical and intelligent insights this book offers.
