Linoleum has been a mainstay floor covering for over 100 years because it is one of the few products made from primarily natural raw materials. It is made of linseed oil, rosins, and wood and cork flour, all calendered onto a natural jute backing. It is a tough yet visually striking floor covering, highly resistant to foot traffic. Because linoleum is an organic product, its performance is enhanced by time, as exposure to air serves to harden and increase its durability, while remaining quiet and comfortable under foot. | Linoleum is ideal for your floor: * Quiet, anti-static * Anti-microbial; no dust mites or allergens! * Stain and water-resistant * Can be used in any room, including kitchens and baths * Your floor is likely to last 100 years! What's in it? Where's it from? Linseed oil, the main ingredient in linoleum, is produced from the flax plant. Also the source of linen, flax is easy to cultivate and in abundant supply. The wood flour is obtained by controlled forestry, including the planting of special forests in Europe. No tropical hardwoods are ever used. Pine rosin is mixed with the oxidized linseed oil to produce a flexible binder. This rosin is obtained without disturbing the tree's growth. The backing used for linoleum is made from spun jute fiber, grown primarily in India and Bangladesh, providing real economic contributions to these developing countries. Jute is a renewable resource.
