At the heart of the marriage between design and music lives Factory Records. Designers such as Peter Saville & 8vo found a true ally in Tony Wilson, a man who was about as high concept as it gets. With ideas as grand as they were absurd, such as numbering absolutely everything the label output including xmas cards, models of the famed Hacienda, stationary, legal documents, etc., Factory created a visual language that has yet to be rivaled among modern torchbearers. Matthew Robertsons Factory Records: The Complete Graphic Album is perhaps the one design exploration that I draw upon most when finding myself in a bind. Part reference guide, part visual stimuli, part archivists wet dream, the book details the production, design, materials, and story behind each of Factorys catalog items. The book designers decision to present objects as just that, photographed tactile objects as opposed to digital files of the design images, gives a depth to the imagery that really accentuates the physicality of the records, something factory strived to achieve. There are few books I can recommend with more gusto, and none that I have personally gained from more. - By Mike Treff
