Fertility is the capability to produce a healthy offspring. For most of history fertility was only applied to women, but it is very much increasingly being applied to males due to the significant increase in knowledge of the importance of the male role in regards to reproduction. Fertility relies heavily on nutrition, sexual activities, endocrinology, timing, economics, and emotions. Men and Women both have what is called hormonal cycles and these are what determine the most likely chance of pregnancy and highest fertility. The female cycle is approximately twenty-eight days long and ovulation take place on about the fourteenth day of their cycle which is the most fertile time for females. The male cycle is erratic since men can produce sperm at any time of the month. For males however, there is the libido that dips sporadically and some scientists feel is related to their internal cycle. During the fourteenth week of fetal growth, women’s eggs form in her ovaries, where they will remain until puberty. At puberty, the eggs will eventually start to mature one-by-one. At ovulation, the egg bursts from the ovary sometimes causing a small, sharp pain called mittelschmerz. If the egg is not fertilized by the male’s sperm, the egg will break down within twenty-four hours into its components (mostly protein) and be reabsorbed by the body.
