Terry a former Vancouver General Hospital security officer says Robert Dziekanski tasered at Vancouver International Airport should not have died. He goes on to say that the taser should not have been used. Terry said as a security officer at VGH we deal with mental ill patients that get out of control. Our response when we get that type of call to the psychiatric ward we send four or five officers to the ward and take the patent down quickly and restrain him or her as needed. We have even disarmed patient with scissors without to big a problem. Terry goes on to say we have to be prepared to deal with some serious problems and just about all of the time we do it without any help from the police. There are times we may sustain bruises or a banged up knees or elbows as we may be dealing with a patient out of control. Security officers at VGH get special training as there job sometimes requires them to deal with some extreme cases. Terry says they are not allowed to use tasers and says he would not use a taser even if he could. My thoughts I wonder why YVR didn’t have a interpreter to communicate with the distressed passenger. I also wonder why the RCMP responded in such a aggressive fashion . Where the reports they where receiving about the passenger in distress exaggerated ? Did the RCMP overreact ? Where the officers inexperienced in dealing with this type of situation ? Who gave the order to taser ? No doubt this taser incident has turned out to be a very serious incident leaving a man dead. Some serious questions need to be answered. Someone should be accountable for this tragedy . The inquest can’t come to soon but in the meantime the RCMP and YVR need to review their methods in dealing with this type of situation. Most certainly YVR needs a interpreter for those that don’t speak English after all this is a international airport . The RCMP need to take a good like at the use of the taser as this is not the first time someone has died from being tasered. This is a senseless death. See less »
