After many centuries in which generic representation had been the norm, distinctive portrait likenesses began to reappear in Europe in the fifteenth centurya significant manifestation of the Renaissance. Fra Filippo Lippi (Italian, ca. 1406-1469) was commissioned to paint a domestic couple, commonly identified as Lorenzo di Ranieri Scolari and Angiola de Bernardo Sapiti, who were married in 1436. This is the earliest surviving Italian double portrait in a domestic setting. In the painting, Lippi placed a magnificent brooch on the womans shoulder, which was undoubtedly highly prized by its owner. The Museums Fra Filippo Jewelry is based on this brooch.
