Stinson Beach resident Goldie Rush (Carole McLaughlin), a bookkeeper to the stars and a member of rock band Grateful Dead’s inner family, died at home on Monday, March 28, of complications from colon cancer. She was 58. Ms. Rush was cofounder of Organizational Common Sense, a personal management company. Over the years she worked for Grateful Dead Records, Round Records, and bands including Bobby and the Midnites, and Phil and Friends. In 1978 she helped organize the Grateful Dead’s trip to Egypt, where the group performed at the Great Pyramid. "Goldie had a unique gift for slaying the dragons of bureaucracy on behalf of her clients," friends noted. Born in Palo Alto on April 14, 1946, she attended Tamalpais High School and moved to her father’s home on Vashon Island, Washington, where she graduated from Issaquah High School. Given the name Carolyn by her parents, she later adopted the name Goldie Rush, just for fun. She studied briefly at the University of Washington, and in 1966 moved back to Marin County. Tall, slim and with gorgeous long legs, she landed a job as a showgirl at Bimbo’s nightclub in San Francisco. In 1971 she moved to Stinson Beach. Crossed the US with Ken Kesey & The Merry Pranksters "Goldie was so much fun and she loved to have fun," said longtime friend, Carol Butler. Some years after Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters traveled the US in the famed 1939 International Harvester school bus named Further, she crossed the country with the group to deliver a replica of the vehicle to the Smithsonian Institution. A gifted problem solver, Ms. Rush encouraged others to follow their dreams. "She was a life coach," said Carol Butler. "She said, ‘you can do this.’" She was active in the Stinson Beach Village Association, Bread and Roses, and in February 2005 reigned as Queen of the Mardi Gras at the Unbroken Chain Tsunami Benefit. Ms. Rush is survived by her son, Aaron Ali Rush of Stinson Beach; and her brother, Pete McLaughlin of Pacifica. A memorial service will be held at noon, Thursday, April 14, her birthday, at the Stinson Beach Community Center. The family has suggested that any memorial contributions be made to the Unbroken Chain Foundation, PO Box 10188, San Rafael, 94912; or the Rex Foundation, PO Box 29608, San Francisco, 94129-0608.
