See more » It's been avidly collected for decades now, and what was once the epitome of cheap glass can bring some pretty substantial prices. There were a number of companies all producing similar wares Federal Glass Co. of Columbus, Ohio; Hocking Glass Co. of Lancaster, Ohio; and Jeannette Glass Co. of Charleroi, Pa.; to name a few but one of the most prolific of all was the Hazel-Atlas Co. The roots of the firm date back to 1885, when two men, Charles N. Brady and Charles H. Tallman, set up shop in a shed in Wellsburg, W.Va., for the purpose of making glass liners for the zinc lids of Mason jars. It was a tradition at the time for blast furnaces to be given names, so Brady's sister-in-law named their stack Hazel. The following year they moved to larger quarters in Washington, Pa., and in 1887 made their first holloware ointment jars, oil and molasses cans, lamp bases and chimneys, introducing opal glass containers when other firms were using only flint or amber glass. As the business expanded and diversified, a new corporation, the Atlas Glass Co., was formed for the sole purpose of making fruit jars, while the Hazel Co. made such commercial products as Vaseline jars, ink bottles and jam and pickle jars. In 1902, the two companies merged, and Hazel-Atlas would continue to make containers and tableware into the 1950s. Many of the table and novelty pieces have a retro range of colors and whimsical decoration that is very appealing to the contemporary collector. These range from aqua ashtrays to clown-topped banks to brilliant blue cocktail shakers, an ice tub adorned with prancing pink elephants, ribbed pitchers and glasses, a series of souvenir state tumblers of the 1950s, sets of canister jars, demitasse and snack sets with a variety of patterns and amusing and durable kiddieware. Among the most popular items then and now are those blue glass pieces bearing the image of a young Shirley Temple (be warned: They have been frequently reproduced). These include a cereal bowl, cream pitcher and mug given as a free premium with Bisquick. The rare modernistic/colonial block cream pitcher is now valued at $1,000 to $1,250, while the ordinary cream pitcher goes for $30 to $35. Even the original ad for the Bisquick promotion, in an intact magazine, is worth $75. Here are a few sample values given in the book: Crisscross pattern crystal and pink refrigerator bowl with cover: $295-$335. Set of four Dutch square shakers salt, pepper, flour and sugar with fired-on colors, on stand: $145. Little Hostess Pastel Party Set, 14 pieces, with green box: $135. 1960s "Moroccan Amethyst" boxed home bartender set with cocktail shaker: $85-$95. Pink elephant cocktail shaker: $65-$75. Wyatt Earp cereal bowl, 5 inches: $35-$40.
