Meadows entrance, and traverses a spectacular alpine landscape en route to Grand Lake near the west entrance of the park. Reaching an elevation of over 12,000 feet above sea level, Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous highway in the United States. It is only open from mid-May through mid-October, depending on the snow conditions. You are likely to see elk, bighorn sheep and marmots somewhere above treeline. There are many places along the road to get out of the car and experience the variety of ecosystems that exist along Trail Ridge: the Beaver Ponds, a boardwalk exploring the workings of beavers along Hidden Valley Creek; Hidden Valley, a deserted ski area in a lodgepole pine and aspen forest; Many Parks Curve, offering views of Horseshoe Park, Moraine Park, Beaver Meadows and much of Estes Park; Rainbow Curve, offering panoramic views from Longs Peak to the Mummy Range; Forest Canyon Overlook, a fenced overlook on the tundra that
