Before even looking for a hostel, think about what you want out of it. Everyone travels differently and different hostels cater towards different types of travelers. Some hostels are much bigger, have a bar, larger lounges, televisions everywhere, offer nightly events and play music constantly. Some hostels are small, have under 10 people in them, don’t have televisions and expect quiet. Think about what type of traveler you are. Do you like to go out and breathe in the culture of another country? Or do you see yourself hanging out more at the hostel and being with other foreigners? If you want to hang out at a hostel, go to a bigger hostel. Bigger hostels will allow you to meet more people and find travelers from all over the world. If you have no problem meeting people or don’t want to hear American music all night, find the smaller hostels. When you plan to stay at a hostel for more than 1 night, book online. Go online, book your first night and upon arrival decide if you want to stay. By booking one night you won’t loose the deposit for the rest of your trip if you absolutely despise the place. One insider tip, if you do decide to stay, most times you can negotiate the price for the rest of your trip, especially if you pay upfront. If you do manage to negotiate the price, pay up front! Some times the receptionist will forget or another will not be as forgiving when check out time rolls around. Imagine if your at one hostel for 10 days and manage to negotiate a price that’s just $3 dollars cheaper per night. That’s an extra $30 dollars for you and your trip. A Quick Recap- Know what you want out of your hostel. Ask up front. Scope the place out before you check in to se if it’s something you’ll like. Only book one night to get a better rate and decide if you’ll stay.
