The directions are inexact, but the general idea is enough to get you going. It’s an art, not a science, you know. Just keep playing until you make ‘em look like roses. For example, the step-by-step images imply you use three leaves, but in the 12th picture with three finished roses you can see that it took more than that for some. If you roll three and it doesn’t have the right fullness at the outer layer, grab another leaf and roll it around what you have, folded a bit shorter and rolled a bit looser. It will work just fine. Tips from the ones I just made in the yard: It might help to find some smaller leaves for the inside layers, and larger ones for the outside. In the images, it looks like the first two were about the same size but the last one was quite a bit larger. It evens out when you roll looser. Many of the leaves on the ground will be too crisp. You’ll want to find colored ones that are still pretty soft, which may mean you need to shake them off a branch or even pluck them. No thread handy? You can strip a leaf down to the stem and veins and use that instead. If the stem is too thick, you can peel it a little from the bottom. It took 4 tries before I made one just as pretty as the pictures above. The making goes pretty fast. Gathering the “right” leaves took far more time, but even so the whole experiment took about 10 minutes. I’m glad I came across this at the beginning of leaf falling season around here - I should be pretty expert at this by the time we get our first leaf storms. * anni
