There are several possible causes of animals eating their own feces, or other non-food items, including malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, increased appetite, or conditions such as diabetes, or thyroid disease. Parasites can be another of the causes for this behavior. It can also be that there are undigested articles of food in the feces that the animal is re-eating. Mothers with newborns will commonly eat the feces of their newborns. Puppies may eat feces as an observation of the mother’s behavior, or as part of exploration. The animal has the desire to clean their environmental area, or their 'nest' It may be a response to recent punishment. The animal may be seeking attention.
