Shimizu Uichi, the son of a pottery wholesaler, was born in Kyoto. Intending to continue the family business, he began commercial studies but instead discovered an interest in making ceramics. After studying briefly with Ishiguro Munemaro at the age of fifteen, he embarked on a career as a studio potter.
