The site is jointly administered by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and the National Park Service. All of the efforts of the Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists are focused on the cellar of a fort-period building just inside the eastern palisade wall line. Excavations on the southwestern end of the cellar have revealed the presence of a set of earthen steps descending from the ground level above. An assortment of early-17th-century artifacts have been excavated from the cellar and more are sure to come as the archaeologists still have several feet of soil to remove before reaching the bottom. more... 2007 has been an exciting year so far at Historic Jamestowne. Thousands of visitors came during Anniversary Weekend and took part in celebrating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. Concerts, reenactments, archaeology tours and other unique performances were part of the experience. Visits by Queen Elizabeth II, President George Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine were among the highlights of the past several weeks.
