The sibling trio is photogenic like the Hanson boys, they play their own instruments like the Hanson three, and they sound like Hanson. The comparisons are inevitable, but whatever people choose to call the Brothers, the word talented needs to be in there somewhere. On their self-titled second album (their first for Hollywood Records), the Brothers use the well worked pop formula that has made their record label a great deal of money. With the youngest Jonas only 14, and the oldest 19, it's easy to understand why Jonas Brothers is a slicked up platter tailored for the Disney Channel. The 14-track disc is a pleasant audio experience geared more toward teens and preteens (although moms and dads will secretly dig it too, even if they don't admit it). The Jonas Brothers don't get any points for originality, but the boys, Nicholas (keyboards, vocals), Kevin (guitar, vocals), and Joe (vocals), get high marks for their ability to parrot current and past musical trends. "S.O.S" kicks the disc off on a jittering, be-bop note. The track channels the sugar-coated niceness of High School Musical and the addictive funk of the Kinks. "I gave my all for you," the Brothers sing, "now my heart's in two." "That's Just The Way We Roll" merges a chunking '70s rhythm with a 21st century production. Big guitars and a catchy chorus make up for the song's oddball lyrics. "Kids Of The Future" is a revamped version of Kim Wilde's irresistible '80s hit, "Kids In America." The Brothers turn Wilde's arena rocker into a stadium sized jam that is too cool to ignore, as is "Australia," a glassy rocker with tight harmonies and beefy guitars. From edgy rock to light pop, Nick, Kevin, and Joe go in many different directions on Jonas Brothers. The string washed "When You Look Me In The Eyes" takes the power ballad to a whole new level. Balladeers like Jon Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, and Meat Loaf have nothing on the Brothers. Man, these kids can really sing. If one song could take the young popsters out of the teen and tween market and into the adult market, this is it. Whether you want to call them the new Hanson or a bionic version of High School Musical, it's hard to ignore the appeal of this New Jersey trio. Jonas Brothers is a fun little disc that grows on you with every spin.
