July 19 - September 21, 2008 Chicago Cultural Center, Exhibit Hall/Yates Gallery 77 E. Randolph St., Chicago Life as a Legend visually celebrates the many sides of this 1950s glamour goddess and immortal legend by exploring both the celebrity of, and the woman behind, one of the world's most recognizable icons. This exhibition presents a lively dialogue between art and media representation, and explores the range of artists' individual engagement with the Marilyn persona and how that impacted their art; it captures the spark, sex appeal and sensation that was Marilyn through the art of Andy Warhol, Allen Jones, Peter Blake, Richard Avedon, Bert Stein, Henri Cartier-Breson, Mel Ramos, and many others using a broad range of media. This vivid and diverse exhibition of some 300 objects captures Marilyn's rise to stardom through works by more than 80 artists in styles ranging from fashion photography to Pop art. Documenting the iconic life of America's favorite sex symbol, this exhibition showcases one of the world’s most famous and intriguing women. The diversity of the collection allows the viewer to enjoy and remember all the facets of this charismatic star, as well as explore more deeply her tender vulnerability. Having traveled in six countries in Europe prior to its U.S. tour, this "blockbuster" exhibition's high artistic quality is its primary appeal. Organized by Aroma in Hamburg, Germany, this exhibition is circulated by International Arts & Artists. It is accompanied by a 144pp hardcover catalog, brochure, related programs and a film series.
