These are lightweight oak spindles with a curly pigtail hook that's fun to use. They're perfect to drop in your bag for on the go spinning, particularly lace. The last pic is of the cotton I'm spinning on one of these spindles. **Please specify Folk Art Star or Snowflake in the order comments. Whorl: red oak, 3 inches, blue stain, satin poly sealer Shaft: oak, blue stain, satin poly sealer Total Weight: .8 oz/22.7 gms Total Length (including hook): 8 inches/20 cms GENERAL: I cut my whorls from actual boards, using a drill press with a hole saw--these are NOT craft store blanks! Each is then carefully shaped and sanded to a smooth, snag-free finish. I use tiny, solid brass eye screws (opened and polished) rather than bulky cup hooks. Each spindle is signed, dated and the weight in fine print on the bottom of the whorl. Though oak is a heavier wood than aspen, this also spins like a dream! The light weight makes it perfect for those slippery and/or short staple luxury fibers (just tested with a merino/silk blend). Wonderful for spinning lace and fingering weights. An awesome choice for the beginner (much better than those clunky student spindles) or the collector.
