You may have heard of Morgan Spurlock’s revealing documentary Super Size Me? If you haven’t, definitely check it out if you were wondering what fast food is capable of. The theme of the movie in four words or less: Super Size is Bad. Not all things super-sized are bad, though. Take bicycle chains, for instance. They are made from precisely manufactured parts of high-strength steel. The chain’s pieces consist of a very feminine hourglass shaped plate on either side of the chain combined with a couple of cylinders. Not too bad. So what happens when we super-size a chain? Well as Johan Verde, a very accomplished Oslo based designer, found out, A super sized chain makes for a beautiful candelabra. At roughly twenty times the size, he found that the pieces of the chain take on their own luster and beauty, and the hole at each link is just big enough to fit a slim candle. My question is, what happens when you continue to increase the scale? Do you get a really cool segmented bench? Do you get a funky shaped house that people would only fully understand from the window of a jet? I don’t know.
