A child can learn mathematics in two ways. One is by using concrete materials during the years when he starts to enjoy manipulating things; another is by abstract methods when he is in the elementary grades. Dr. Montessori found that a young child can easily absorb the concepts and skills of arithmetic in a delightful way, if he has experience in using the mathematical equipment in his early years.
