The cast iron construction provides superior heat distribution and retention along the bottom, sides, and lid. Excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. The oven's strong surface resists scratches, stains, and the effects of everyday use, and the hygienic porcelain enamel is non-reactive with food. Porcelain enamel also eliminates the need to season the cast iron. The oven measures 10-3/4 inches in diameter and 4-1/2 inches deep. A black rim on the oven and its tight-fitting lid is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Although practical, the attractive finish makes the oven a great piece of serveware at the table. Lodge enamel cookware is safe for gas, electric, ceramic, and induction cooktops, and is oven safe to 400 degrees F. It's dishwasher-safe but hand washing is recommended to preserve its beauty. Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The cast iron piece is hand prepared before several layers of porcelain enamel are applied and baked in very high temperature ovens. The body is cast iron, an excellent material for cookware for its superior heat distribution and heat retention. The bottom, sidewalls and even the lid heat evenly which actually reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are applied over the Cast Iron to eliminate the need to season the cast iron. The porcelain enamel surface is chip resistant and easy to clean.
