Using your child’s measurements as a guide, cut the sleeve and cardigan pieces out of a sweatshirt as shown. Be sure to cut the cardigan body piece as one whole piece, and each ribbing piece as a whole piece. Finish the center front by zigzagging the raw edges, then fold over ½” and topstitch on the outside. Attach ribbing at the neck, cuffs, and bottom. Finish by attaching snaps or decorative buttons. You may vary this design by using a sweater instead of a sweatshirt or by sewing on appliqués or buttons for decoration. Additionally, you could add a front zipper instead of buttons and a standard collar from any remaining sweatshirt material. If the elbows are already worn out on the sweatshirt you’re using for this design, try using two sweatshirts of different colors and piece the remaining “good” parts of the sleeves together for a striped effect as shown on the following page. You might also try alternating the ribbing colors – use one color for the waist and the other color for the sleeves and collar.
