Just got back from the New York Comicon. My opinions as follows... It was much better run than last year, where they had to turn people away. The first thing I noticed is the sheer volume of individual artists who are self-publishing top quality comics -- such good stuff, that if you didn't know better, you'd think it was done by a well staffed publishing house. Hats off to the progress of low-cost printing. Lots of mainstreamed artists got their start that way -- not that their art necessarily went mainstream, but their books sales have, which ain't bad. Of course, Tokyo Pop, DC and Marvel had huge booths. Manga remains big, but not as spread out among other publishers as American comics, except for Del Rey Manga, which is charging into the market at a gallop, and is also publishing my own graphic novel, called "The Reformed" (written by me, illustrated by Anzu), scheduled for release this October, in time for a Halloween. DC and Marvel seem to be there mainly for people to get signatures and meet their top artists on the ground floor, rather than having to go up one flight to Artists' Alley. Top Cow had an impressive lineup of material to offer, and with some of the nicest staff. Oni Press has some very impressive graphic novel authors. In my opinion, they are a publishing house to keep an eye on. They just keep getting better. Some of the indies, like Devil's Due, have an impressive array of licenses. Computer drawing programs are mixed. Some are impressive, others, eh. You've got to be careful what you buy. My suggestion is to get something that helps you touch up your scanned stuff, or gives you cool clip-art BG's. But that CGI looking figurine stuff is no substitute for hand drawn action, and it wasn't, at the Con. Artists' alley was packed with artists, but not as many fans as last year, still, the talent was even better. Ran into a bunch of guys I've worked with. Nice to catch up. Some of them you only know from their drawings, but rarely meet face to face, except at the cons. Some of these guys, I've worked with over many years, and STILL haven't met. I did a seminar/drawing presentation on my book, "Cartoon Cool" and retro-style cartooning. At the end, I did Q&A, and gave some pointers on how to break into the business, and comport yourself in a professional manner in order to make a superior impression on the people you want to work for. A senior art director from DC came up to me after and said he's going to repeat what I said to every one of his employees. That was cool. Thanks for stopping by to read this blog/plog. I hope it's been helpful, in case you weren't able to make it to the Comicon, but were interested in hearing about some of the goings-on. Best, Chris
