In the sea of Italian restaurants in Boston's famous North End, Mare stands out. New England's chilly waters substitute for Venice's lagoon at this ultramodern spot showcasing Italian coastal cuisine. Organic vegetables and bold flavors such as shaved bottarga (dried red mullet), black truffles, and balsamic reduction are the perfect supporting cast for roasted fish and grilled shellfish. Try the seared diver scallops in pureed carrot soup, the airy cod cheeks, or the grigliata di pesce, a one-plate sampling of the evening's grilled fish. Chef Marisa Iocco's pastas are locally famous, and the three-flour scialatielli with clams and Colina tomatoes makes you regret a lifetime of linguine drowned in red clam sauce. Leave room for the homemade gelato paired with the house limoncello (entrées, $18–$36). Address: 135 Richmond St., Boston, Massachusetts Tel: 617 723 6273
