See more » Back in the 50s jazzers didnt get much cooler than Art Pepper, the alto saxophonist on the front lines of the West Coastbased "cool jazz" movement. With his velvety tone, Pepper could take the edge off those sweltering California summer nights, and even bring the room temperature down a few degrees with his sleek, controlled solos. And lord knows that Modern Jazz Classics needs some cooling down. The killer charts for these 12 classic jazz sides, arranged by Marty Paich for an 11-piece big band, are hot, hot, hot! Put this one on at your next dinner party and get ready for compliments on your good taste. Your guests say, "What is this? Its swingin!" You wink at them and say, "Its Art Pepper, baby. You dig?" Even before Pepper comes in, the mood is just right on Dizzy Gillespies "Groovin High." Saxes and piano throw the call-and-response melody back and forth atop a simmering swing beat, then the rest of the brass gets in on the action. Soon enough, those glistening horns are yelling back and forth in joyous, thick parallel harmonies that could easily ride out the whole song in style. But then Jack Sheldon comes in with a muted trumpet solo, as if to herald the arrival of our star, and here comes Pepper after a minute-20, fashionably late and sporting a style so slick and laid-back it practically gels your hair for you. And lo, the fingers snap involuntarily, the corners of your mouth rise unavoidably. Pepper is every bit as classy on a haunting track like Thelonious Monks immortal "Round Midnight." The brass trades glitz for moody crescendos and dark shades, and Peppers right out front, playing the blues out on the street corner late at night. That silken tone of his wraps sadness up in a deep embrace, holding it til the morning comes again. But Pepper and his band havent much patience for mournfulness, not when theres toe-tapping to inspire. Just listen to the pyrotechnics on the Sonny Rollins tune "Airegin," taken at the kind of pace that separates the pros from the greenhorns (pun very much intended!). The whole bands shooting off sparks on this one, and Peppers at the center of it, effortlessly cool and spicy all the same. On Modern Jazz Classics, Art Pepper lives up to his name. See less »
