Of all the truly great actors who have graced the silver screen, none has been more over loved than Robert Donat. Though he appeared in relatively few films, this amazing actor gave the films something few other actors achieved. Case in point is his much deserved Academy Award for Best Actor in 1939s Goodbye Mr. Chips. He won over Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind, Laurence Olivier in Wuthering Heights, James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Mickey Rooney in Babes in Arms. While all performances are outstanding in these classic films, no actor ever deserved the Award more than Donat for his unforgettable performance! Because of a severe case of asthma, Donat was ill for most of his career. He had to limit his screen roles and choose to live in his native England. Warner Brothers had planned Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood for him. Due to illness, he had to refuse the roles which eventually went to Errol Flynn. He made only one film in the USA, Edward Smalls production of The Count of Monte Cristo, which the Charles Allis Art Museum will show on January 2, 2008. The Charles Allis Art Museum is extremely proud to announce a long over-due Tribute to Robert Donat!
