As 1960 dawned, no pretenders in the US had threatened Elvis Presley's position as king. The month after his army release in March, Stuck On You bolted to Number One to be followed by It's Now Or Never and Are You Lonesome Tonight? later in the year. But many challengers were emerging - and lots of them were girls!. Four black teenagers from New Jersey, The Shirelles, were one of the earliest and best of the sixties female groups. And the teen romance market was well catered for with artists like Bobby Vee, Gene Pitney and Ricky Nelson. At the beginning of 1961, 19-year old Bob Dylan arrived in Greenwich Village, New York to try and establish himself on the folk scene. He was not alone in feeling that most white rock music was now aimed at the lowest common denominator. In 1961 much of the best American popular music came from the Tamla Motown group of labels in Detroit, owned and masterminded by Berry Gordy (who had previously worked on the assembly line at Ford). His intention was to promote local black talent. Within 18 months of the label's inception, many of their acts were national stars. Equally significant soul acts could be found on other labels, like Atlantic who had pioneered R&B in the 50s.
