The nocturnal (or nocturlabe) is a very old instrument. The concept is ancient, used by mariners to tell time at night by measuring the stars. The design, however, is all original. This piece was crafted in Whystler's digital studio, produced in art-acrylic, and tea-stained for the look of aged horn or bone. It is fully functional and meant to be worn as a pendant. Operating the nocturnal has a steampunky charm in itself. After moving the smaller pointer to the date on the outer dial, you locate the north star in the central hole. Then when the long pointer is aligned with the two stars in the end of the bowl of the big dipper, the time is revealed on the inner dial. So now you can tell time at night without a powered time piece. This is great for night owls, vampires, and those who appreciate a gothic or steampunk look. (dimensions = 7 cm from top to bottom)
