If you've ever wanted the large screen and graphics-rendering power of a 5+ pound notebook but you refuse, as any reasonable traveler would, to carry a brick, the 3.3 pound Panasonic Y5 is the perfect solution. Panasonic utilized their considerable expertise in making ultralight notebooks (think R5, T5, W5), in designing their ideal desktop-replacement, the Y5. In so doing, they created a notebook that offers much more screen size and power, for its weight, than any other option. The Y5 features a 14.1" SXGA+ TFT. This large, high-resolution screen gives you a tremendous amount of desktop. Whether you like to work with many visible windows, or want to edit a single photo at intense resolution, you can do it with the Y5. The Panasonic Y5 is a workhorse. It features Intel's Core Duo low-voltage L2400 1.66GHz processor. This CPU delivers high-end dual-core performance, but still preserves battery life. There is also 128mb (shared) VRAM, 2.0gb RAM (max), and a 120gb HDD (max). And, the keyboard has a fantastic 19mm keypitch. The Y5 has a 9-hour runtime (official manufacturer listed times are optimistic and only ~5 is realistic under normal settings). The integrated DVD-RW module is custom designed by Panasonic just to make the Y-series as thin and light as possible. And, an optional docking station (USB 2.0 x 4, VGA, LAN, power) makes 1-step docking a 2-second process. The The Y5 is durable as well. It withstood 50kg (110 pounds) of weight, as well as a 30cm (11.8 inch) drop, in Panasonic's lab tests. While this is not a guarantee that it will withstand that in the future (and it is not guaranteed to do so), a strong chassis is a great starting place for an ultraportable notebook. The hard drive is shock-insulated. The spill-resistant keyboard helps (but is not guaranteed) to protect the rest of the laptop in case of a liquid spill, with a drainage duct on the side. The Y5 comes in silver, but is also available (by special order only) in black, gunmetal, metallic light blue, and red. (Click here to launch color chooser.) The Y5 comes with Dynamism's rescue service warranty and unlimited toll-free tech support. The Y5/L series starts shipping from Japan on October 27th. Order online or contact your sales representative (sales@dynamism.com / 1-800-711-6277) with any questions or orders.
