How It Works When a PG&E customer uses an average amount of electricity and natural gas, 5.3 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2)—a greenhouse gas—is emitted into the atmosphere each year. Through ClimateSmart, customers can choose to pay a small amount on their monthly utility bill (based on energy usage), which will fund new environmental projects aimed at removing an equal amount of CO2 from the atmosphere – making the customer's energy use "climate neutral."
