The design of our pendant is based on a remarkable German ring ensemble from around 173040. The ensemble consists of a single gold ring and 48 cut stones that can be inserted into or removed from the ring according to the wearers taste. This ensemble is an exquisite example of a work in peitre dure, meaning hard stone in Italian, which refers to the artistic cutting of semi-precious stones to fashion extravagant luxury objects, from architectural ornament and furniture to ornate display items and personal jewelry. From the Renaissance to the early 19th century, the affluent societies of Europe were mesmerized by works in pietre dure, both as diplomatic gifts and as objects of desire. The original ring ensemble on which our pendant is based originally belonged to Phillip Karl von Eltz (16651743), one of the great lords of Germany and the highest-ranking ecclesiastical priest-elector in the Holy Roman Empire. Produced in cooperation with the Eltz Castle, Burg Eltz, Germany. 22K matte gold overlay, with dumortierite. Pendant length 1 1/8 in.; chain length 18 in. With a brass lobster claw clasp. Pietre Dure Cardinal's Stone Dumortierite Pendant 09-088188 Member Price: $58.50 each Non-Member Price: $65.00 each Quantity:1
