The Japanese craft of Nambu-tekki (cast iron) springs from the middle of the 17th century and remains popular today. Here it is used to create a humble box incorporating a traditional motif of the pine tree, which symbolizes long life in Japan. The characteristic black color is the result of a lacquer glaze called urushi which prevents rust. The box can be used for multiple purposes, placed on a hearth or mantle; it makes an especially suitable container for matches.
