Samuel Bellamy was captain of the pirate ship Whydah. He attacked ships off the coast of New England. Early in 1717 the Whydah sank in a storm near Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Bellamy drowned. In 1984 divers began recovering the Whydah, the only known pirate shipwreck, along with lots of gold, silver, and other pirate belongings.
