The podcaster of the year told an audience of 1,000 at the Podcast Expo in Ontario, California Friday that Apple's iTunes software was the best thing and the worst thing that ever happened to podcasting. Leo Laporte, founder of the TWIT network of podcasts, said Apple (AAPL : 76.98, -0.03, 0.0% ) made podcasts accessible to millions by developing software that made it easy to download the show. However, the association of Apple and its iPod product with podcasts is confusing to many consumers, Laporte said, and has limited audience growth. "Is podcasting the right name, given also Apple's asserting it owns the word 'pod' and is it good for Apple to be a monopoly in this?" he asked during his keynote to standing room only audience of more than 1,000 in the Ontario, Calif. Conference Center. Laporte said he's now calling his 13 shows, "netcasts." "People understand the idea of a 'cast," and they also know the Net," Laporte added. "Our job is to grow the audience, and to make Netcasts more accessible." Taking the word "pod," off them, he said, may help that process along. Laporte also discussed his own decision to insert advertising into his programs, after vowing a year ago never to do so. "I was naive," he said in an interview after his speech. Producing more than a dozen shows, and involving hosts and guests, Laporte said he feels they have a right to expect some return for their time. He said podcast/netcast advertising needs to try new approaches. "Mainstream media turned into a machine that gives you 4 minutes of content for 3 minutes of advertising. That's not fair." Laporte said he's experimenting with advertising on his shows. One effort may be a "listener's club" which would offer discounts for sponsor's products. Curry company raises more cash Adam Curry's podcast company has raised another $15 million in venture capital. PodShow Inc.'s second round of financing was led by DAG Ventures. You have to concede the timing of the announcement, on the first day of the Podcast Expo, is interesting. The Expo is attracting hundreds of amateurs who podcast for love, while Curry's company is helping podcasters do it for money. One could argue PodShow is looking more and more like a new media company, and gathering and developing resources that will make it even more difficult for indie podcasters to get attention from advertisers as well as listeners. Ron Bloom, CEO of PodShow, said the firm "is emerging as a new type of media company, driven by the passionate demand of a growing audience and the increasingly available treasure-trove of high-quality content created outside of the Hollywood system." Podcast adopts product placement Frenchmaid GoDaddy.com has struck an advertising deal with the saucy French Maids podcast which delivers tech how-to's in a light-hearted, provocative sexy format. "The entertaining, custom-produced episode features the maids in a four-minute video podcast showing how to register a domain name with GoDaddy.com," according to Bob Parsons, CEO and founder of the domain registry and Web hosting company. Mark McCrery of Podtrac put the deal together. "This represents a new advertising format where the podcast takes product placement to a new level," said McCrery. "The audience gets to learn about a new product, from the user-generated content they subscribe to and with personalities and programming they really enjoy." The new episode will be available at GoDaddy.com and through the French Maid TV RSS feed. 2 for 1 at Podcast Expo Tim Bourquin's organized two days of speakers and workshops for Portable Media and Podcast Expo here in Ontario, California. He's not the only one. Opening with a keynote from "This Week in Tech's" Leo Laporte, the Expo exhibition space for including dozens of businesses pitching for podcasters' attention. One of them is Podango, a network of podcasts focused on various subjects.
