Caring for Stainless Flatware Before using your Reed & Barton flatware for the first time, it is recommend that you wash it thoroughly in hot water using a mild soap or detergent. Rinse in clean, hot water, and dry immediately. Stainless steel resists stains, rust, and corrosion better than most other metals. However, all metals will react to extreme conditions, so please keep the following facts in mind: * Discoloration, pitting, and corrosion are most often caused by sustained exposure to foods that contain chloride, i.e., table salt, mustard, mayonnaise, and eggs. Soaking flatware in water for a prolonged period, especially if your flatware is soiled, can also have this undesirable effect. * The chlorine and mineral content of your water, especially iron, can cause corrosion of stainless steel flatware. In fact, the makeup of your local water can be the sole cause of corrosion and discoloration. Automatic Dishwashers * To help ensure the long life of your flatware, it is suggested that you remove the flatware baskets from your dishwasher shortly after the drying cycle is complete. This will decrease the amount of time the flatware spends in a very hot, moist atmosphere, and permit the flatware to dry in cool, drier air. * You may also want to check that the flatware is completely dry before storing it; some items in the dishwasher trap water, which can spill onto your stainless. * Use only good-quality dishwashing detergents. Harsh dishwashing detergents can harm flatware surfaces. It is also advisable to wash your stainless separately from aluminum, sterling, or silver-plated items, as pitting can occur. Special Cleaning Should special cleaning be necessary, a mildly abrasive, all-purpose quality stainless cleaner will help remove stains or discoloration while maintaining and reviving the beautiful finish of your stainless. You can also use rubbing alcohol or salad oil to clean stubborn water spots. Shine with a sponge doused in white vinegar. * Print this page * Email this page to a friend * Customer Reviews
