Many medical students begin their careers with the dream of a small town, rural family practice, but often their vision fades in the urban and large hospital dominated training programs. The WVU Rural Family Medicine Residency at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, is specially designed to nurture and educate residents in the unique rural setting of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Physicians in the Rural Family Medicine Program have the opportunity to teach and practice in areas of their own special competence and interest. West Virginia Universitys Rural Family Medicine Residency Program was initially created as a 1-2 program, with the internship year at a tertiary care center and the remaining two years in a rural practice environment. The dramatic success and growth of the program has lead to the evolution of a rural residency with all three years of training based in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. We are the Flagship residency program for West Virginia Universitys Health Sciences Center Eastern Division. Family Medicine stands at the forefront of WVUs nationally recognized innovative efforts in rural medical education. The program is approved by the American College of Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Family Practice. The focal point of learning experience is our 10,000 square feet state-of-the-art medical Center located in the small community of Harpers Ferry. This freestanding clinic serves a diverse population in the surrounding Shenandoah Valley and saw a volume of more than 20,000 patients in 2002. The bright and refreshing environment allows patient care, education, service, and research to combine with technology in delivering the best quality health care experience. Other training sites include City Hospital, Jefferson Memorial Hospital, The Martinsburg VA Center, The Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab Center, and the WVU Maternity and Women's Health Center . The strength of our program is in the graduates who boast a 100% rate on the Family Practice Board Certification Examination and 71% first post-residency practice location in a rural or small hospital. Our program is designed to provide you with experiences that will give you the confidence to perform all aspects of family Medicine. If your dream is a small town family practice, why not spend these vital years of your education in a quality rural residency program!
