In many ways, this word book is what started it all in terms of dictionaries. If there hadn't been Samuel Johnson's Dictionary, there might never have been Webster's or the "Oxford English Dictionary" as we know them. Click here to read a few excerpts. On April 15, 1755 and desperately in need of it, the English language finally gained its first true dictionary. Nine years after he began, Dr. Samuel Johnson of London published the first English dictionary to focus on everyday words, not just obscure ones that lexicographers had concocted. Just as important, it was the first dictionary to enlist the works of Shakespeare and other great writers to illustrate a word's usage. The most faithful adaptation in print This Levenger Press edition is the first selected printing in nearly 40 years and perhaps the Dictionary's most faithful adaptation ever. We commissioned Professor Jack Lynch of Rutgers University, a Johnson scholar, to select 3,100 words from the original that would be of most interest today. For each word, he includes every definition from the original, all the quotations Johnson used to put it in context, the etymology and the original, spell-check-defying orthography. The result is edifying, and delightful. Our language's legacy We owe much to Johnson's mighty tome. This was the dictionary that helped America declare its independence and that attorneys of constitutional law still consult today. If you love language, are curious about how words got their meanings and want to add authoritative depth to your word power, Samuel Johnson's Dictionary will be a valued addition to your bookshelf. It is the dictionary that defined the very word. Hardcover, 654-page abridged edition, 6 1/2"W x 9 1/2"H, with an attractive two-color layout and a convenient lie-flat binding.
