I've watched Smallville on and off for the past few years, but never took the time to see it in sequence. The one thought that stuck with me through all of that was, "Why Lana? What is there beyond the (admittedly) beautiful face?" The writers created a much more intersting, engaging and real character in Chloe. This year I sat down and watched all the seasons sequentially, and finally started to warm up to Lana as a character. But it all slips away again in Season Four. The witch-reincarnated story line just does not meld well with the whole "Smallville" concept. Could work well independently, but not here. I enjoyed Jason early in the season before all the twists and family turns started emerging. As he became less sympathetic he just became kind of boring, and I started tuning out the whole Jason/Lana plot. That aside, I like Season Four. The opener is great - the scene where Clark flies is gripping. I really like the Lois character...although I don't know how the writers envision the transition from the present relationship between her and Clark to a romance. Right now they remind me more of sparring siblings. But Lois brings a nice element of humor to the show, and she is tough and not so ready to be rescued or bowled over by Clark's "aw shucks" charm. The relationship with his parents does not get as much attention, and I did not feel the sadness I have felt in previous seasons when watching Lex, and sensing the inevitable tragedy of his turn to evil. But Chloe finally learns Clark's secret (an awesome couple of scenes) and also how he struggles with hiding his abilities, while trying to help people. And there seems to be a new maturity to Chloe. She may still have feelings for Clark but she also seems to have come to peace with the fact that friendship is all they will have. Finally, it's always fun watching Clark, and seeing the seeds of the "Man of Steel." This show does a nice job of pulling together the two identities, Clark Kent/superhero. In every other treatment of Superman, you feel two distinct characters (and Superman is never very much fun, despite all the good he does. He's more a costume than a character.) So while there are certainly detracting elements, it's a good season - as they all are.
