Last year I ran a challenge helping people think about using titles on a page. Following is a brief summary of what we learned from that challenge: Tips for Great Titles The purpose of a title on anything, whether it is a layout, a book, a movie or a song is that it gives the person hearing it, reading it or seeing it a clue as to what type of story is going to be told. An effective title on a scrapbook layout will help to define the story of the layout and help express the theme and emotional content of the layout. When thinking about the title for a layout there are two different things you need to consider; content and appearance. The content of a title are the actual words you use in the title. To help you decide on the content of a title, these are some helpful hint: 1) Write your journaling first sometimes it helps to come up with a title if you have put words to the story you are trying to tell 2) Use a play on words or names, an example is Babbling Brooke about a little girl named Brooke who talks a lot 3) Use clichés, you would want to avoid these in your journaling but they make great titles. The web is filled with cliché sites such as clichesite.com, copydesk.org/clichés.htm and sprotscliche.com 4) Use pop culture references look to trends in music, television, news and lifestyle 5) Use Song & Book titles or lift titles from other resources. A web-site resource for this is The perfect title: www.theperfecttitle.com 6) Use rhyme and alliteration alliteration is the repetition of the initial consonant or a succession of similar sounds. Repetitive sounds make words roll right off the tongue, example The Sweet Smell of Success 7) Use quotes, a resource for quotes is Scrapbook quotes: www.en.thinkexist.com/Scrapbooking_Quotes To determine if the content of your title is successful, ask yourself these questions 1) Does the title summarize the story that the layout is trying to tell? 2) Does the title act as a headline making the viewer want to take a closer look? The appearance of your title includes both font choices and the compositional placement of the title within your layout. How you make your title look by the choice of fonts, size, color, etc. is going to reinforce the emotional content of your title and layout. For example using a soft, delicate script font on a new-born baby layout is going to emphasis the delicate nature of the subject matter. The placement of your title within your layout can serve as a compositional tool. Depending on the size and placement of your title you can use the title to help ground your layout (having it run the length of your layout), highlight the focal point photo (either by placing the title on or next to the photo), bridge one part of your layout to another part of your layout, or balance your layout either symmetrically or asymmetrically. The layout can also function as the focal point of your layout. This is especially effective if you are doing a layout without photos. To determine if the appearance of your title is successful, ask yourself these questions 1) Do the font choices reflect the theme and emotional content of my layout? 2) Do the colors, size and appearance of the title reflect the theme & emotional content of my layout? 3) Does the placement of the title work well within the composition of the layout? (Is my layout balanced? If not can I move the title to make it more balanced? Is my focal point clear? Can I use the title to help clarify the focal point? Should I make the title..by its placement, size & color the focal point of the layout? Is my layout unified? If not, can I use my title to help bring unity to it?) I hope this gives you some ideas for coming up with titles for your page. If you create a layout with a terrific title, will you share it with us by posting a link here?
