Stone Mountain Boarding Schools for boys was established to provide boys ages 11-16 with an exciting alternative to traditional education programs. We are a licensed, year-round intervention ADD boarding school that provides a structured academic and behavioral program in an outdoor environment. Admissions are accepted year round. Many of the boys who attend Stone Mountain have exhibited learning disabilities, ADD/ ADHD and emotional or behavior problems. They have had difficulty focusing on school work and other activities. Their parents may be frustrated by their child's inability to follow through on projects, whether it is a homework assignment or household chore. The experiences at our boys boarding school provide a foundation for increasing self-confidence and responsible behavior. Students who meet the admission criteria can expect to stay at Stone Mountain School for a minimum of 12 months (average 14-18 months). Students live with their peer groups in rustic cabins, supervised 24 hours a day by counseling staff. Each group is responsible for the care of its own cabin and support structures and all boys participate in daily chores, such as cleaning, cooking, and wood chopping. The outdoor environment offers many lessons, such as the value of teamwork, self-reliance, and natural consequences of behavior. The boys take part in a wide range of activities including swimming, canoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, primitive skills development, and basic carpentry. Our staff consists of experienced residential counselors and wilderness experts who possess solid life values and are good role models. Staff receive in-depth training in wilderness first aid, reality therapy, group processing techniques, and strategies for building a positive peer culture. We maintain a staff-to-student ratio of 1 to 5 so that we can give each student the individual attention he deserves. The program, specially designed as a boarding school for children with ADD, uses the concepts of reality therapy. Students learn through direct experience how to take responsibility for one's actions and deal with natural consequences. Students work through a level system that includes requirements in personal hygiene, social behaviors, and independent living skills. Parents whose children have attended Stone Mountain School report that these boys get along better in the home, perform better in school, and have a more positive outlook on life. Our goal is to return the child to his home or community at a level of functioning that will lead to successful personal and academic accomplishments and provide a foundation for transition into adulthood.
