A stormglass like this one was used aboard Charles Darwins H.M.S. Beagle to forecast the weather in the Galapagos Islands. Inside the Danish brass fitting, a glass vial holds a mixture of potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, camphor, alcohol and distilled water. As barometric pressure changes, crystals form in the solution to give you hints to the coming weather. * Display freestanding or mounted to a boat bulkhead or wall * Optional mounting bracket is not included * Polished brass * If fernlike crystals are forming, cold weather is brewing * If star-shaped crystals are descending from above, expect frost in the morning * If a dense lattice of crystals fills the vial, there's no escaping a rainstorm (or so they say) * The stormglass adds old-world charm to any room...and any mariner will find pleasure in contemplating its mystery!
