There are many factors that may lead to vaginal dryness. Some of them are: * Diaphragms * Condoms * Tampons * Drying soaps * Douches * Medications (antihistamines/decongestants, antidepressants, antibiotics) * Chemotherapy and radiation * Allergens (for example the fragrances and dyes in toilet paper) While all of these may cause problems with lubrication, the main cause of vaginal dryness remains low estrogen levels. The female hormone estrogen maintains vaginal tissue elasticity, acidity, and normal vaginal lubrication. All of these factors help to keep vaginal tissue healthy. However, when estrogen levels decrease the result is thinning and drying of the vaginal wall. Estrogen levels can be influenced by many factors, including menopause and perimenopause, childbirth, breast-feeding, immune disorders, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and even cigarette smoking. Sometimes, certain medications you are taking can cause vaginal dryness. For example, allergy and cold medications are known to cause dryness of mucous membranes, and those of your vagina are not an exception. Douching (cleansing vagina with liquid preparation) may also disrupt the normal vaginal chemical balance and cause dryness and irritation. Other times the reasons for vaginal dryness have nothing to do with physical causes. Emotional issues may also lead to lack of arousal and vaginal dryness. If you have unresolved problems in your relationship, it you feel depressed or you are under tremendous stress, probably you would benefit more from counseling than from any of the treatments for vaginal dryness listed below. Or, you could try HerSolution Gel – it works by enhancing sexual response, arousal and strength of orgasm, thus improving overall sexual experience. If you experience occasional vaginal dryness only during intercourse, this may mean that you are not aroused enough. Often, it turns out that your ability to lubricate is not gone but rather simply requires longer time and more stimulation. Talk to your partner about your likes and what feels good and make enough time to allow your body to get adequately aroused and lubricated.
