Summary Teach at a primary school in a remote African town in the hills of Machakos, away from the tourist trails and the bustle of Nairobi. Program Description Volunteers teach at government primary schools in the hill towns of Machakos. The students range in age from 4 to 14 from pre-kindergarten to class 8. At one of the schools where we place volunteers, there are over 600 children with 12 teachers and the principal. Some classes have more than 70 students for one teacher. Despite the humble surroundings of the town and school, the students are very bright achievers; they regularly finish in the top five in academic contests among about 80 schools in their district. You can choose which age group you want to work with. For the younger children, you can help them with conversational English, basic math, arts & crafts, board games, playground games, sports like soccer and running, music, and any other talents you wish to share. For the older students, you can teach more formal subjects like English, science, math, and history. The school schedule is Monday-Friday from 8am to 3pm with a two-hour sports period from 3-5pm where the students do things like cross-country running, soccer, and basketball. All classes are taught in English in Kenya.
