Sunday-Monday, September 23-24 USA or Canada / Johannesburg, South Africa / Sterkfontein Board an overnight flight for "Joburg," South Africa's biggest metropolitan area and commercial center. You are met on arrival by your A&K guide and begin the short drive to "The Cradle of Mankind," a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site in a peaceful Sterkfontein valley just outside the city. This strip of caves contains the fossilized remains of ancient animals, plants and hominids. After an introductory tour at the site, adjourn to a luxury suite in your boutique hotel, set in a private wildlife reserve nearby. Forum Homini Tuesday, September 25 Sterkfontein / Livingstone, Zambia After breakfast, return to the Sterkfontein Caves for a morning of exploration at the site where the fi rst adult "ape-man" was discovered in 1936. Transfer to the Johannesburg Airport in the afternoon to board a flight to Livingstone, Zambia, and the Royal Livingstone Hotel, luxuriously located on the banks of the Zambezi River. Early this evening, you are driven to the hotel's landing jetty on the Zambezi to board the 'African Queen' for a slow, upstream, wildlife-viewing cruise along the length of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Disembark for dinner on the riverbank before returning to your hotel. Royal Livingstone Hotel B, L, D Wednesday, September 26 Livingstone Start the day with a walking tour of Victoria Falls, the great mile-wide waterfall on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Columns of spray from the 100-meter drop can often be seen from miles away, and the roar of over 100 million gallons of water plummeting over the edge each minute makes the fall's local name - Mosi-oa-Tunya, "The Smoke That Thunders" - particularly apt. The rest of the morning and lunch are at leisure with time, if you wish, to take the "Flight of the Angels" helicopter tour. This afternoon, accept the Chief's invitation to visit Mukuni's Village, home to approximately 7,000 of the local Leya people. It's an opportunity to walk with the village inhabitants as they explain their traditional lifestyle, show you their homes and introduce you to village craftspeople, with traditional foods and beer to taste. Then you're free to spend the rest of the day as you like: one option is the colorful Maramba Market, where local people sell everything from chitengies (brightly colored fabrics) to beads, curios, vegetables and farm animals. Royal Livingstone Hotel B, D Thursday-Saturday, September 27-29 Livingstone / South Luangwa Valley Board a private charter flight this morning to Mfuwe, then transfer to your lodge on one of the South Luangwa Valley's many ox-bow lakes. South Luangwa is known as one of the world's great wildlife sanctuaries, and you will have plenty of opportunities to verify that claim during your three-night stay. The reserve is diverse and densely populated with 60 animal and 400 bird species; elephant herds of up to 70 individuals are frequently spotted. Walking safaris originated in this park and remain one of the best ways to experience this pristine wilderness fi rsthand. Guided safari walks give you a uniquely intimate point of view: from a meandering line of termites to a family of hippos playing in the river, you see Luangwa up-close and without barriers. Another wildlife-viewing option: open fourwheel- drive vehicles, driven by expert rangers past wetlands bursting with antelope, crowned cranes and scurrying baboons. Buffalo, baboon, hyena, hippo, giraffe and lion are abundant throughout the valley. Night drives with a spotlight provide an opportunity to see nocturnal animals, particularly leopard, night ape and bushbaby. Kapani Lodge B, L, D Sunday-Monday, September 30-October 1 South Luangwa / Maun, Botswana / Okavango Delta Fly back to Livingstone to board a charter flight to Mfuwe and on to Maun in Botswana. On arrival you are met and transferred to your classic tented safari camp deep in the Okavango Delta, adjacent to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. This region offers some of the best wildlife-viewing in the Delta. Be ready for elephant, giraffe,
