First of all you need to understand that one pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 extra calories. So in order to lose one pound of fat a week, you need to create a 3,500 calorie deficit each week. Here are the three different ways to create a calorie deficit: * Burn more calories than you consume by increasing your physical activity. If you eat enough calories to support your BMR, but exercise more, you will create a calorie deficit by burning calories. This method will only work if you do not overeat! For example, if you work out to burn 500 calories a day, you will lose about one pound of fat per week (500 calories x 7 days a week = 3500 calories). * Eat fewer calories than you burn each day. Instead of doing cardio 7 days a week to burn 500 calories a day, you can create a deficit of 500 calories a day with your diet. So basically calculate your BMR, and whatever that number is subtract 500 calories from that. * A combination of eating fewer calories and exercising to burn more calories. Again taking your BMR, if you cut 200 calories a day from that number and burned 300 calories a day from exercising you would be creating a deficit of 500 calories a day. Resulting in a pound a week. This would be the best way to go for most people because you will not have to make major changes in your diet or exercise routine. Some people hate to cut calories, while others hate to exercise.
